Ken Howey tells of unexpected visitors at a remote cottage

29th November 2023

Ken Howey was born in Thropton in 1924 and was 97 when we recorded his stories and memories for OOT. He was one of four children and his parents who lived in a 2up 2down house and remembers having no running water or electricity and with an earthen closet outside. Overall he remembers a happy childhood with the freedom to roam across the hills and moors.

Ken tells us here about a cottage at Sunbrough Cottage on the moors above Cartington which was used as a holiday cottage. He recalls unexpected visitors and a suprise visit from a hot air balloon

Ken was well known in Rothbury where he had lived with his wife Doris for many years and passed away in May 2023. At his funeral many people wore pink, in honour of Ken’s affection for brightly coloured trousers.
