Creative Coquet Valley

The Out of Town Museum commissioned a composer and an artist photographer to create new artworks inspired by people’s stories about living in the valley. The results are a remarkable musical film and a captivating series of illustrated memories.

Welcome to Coquetdale – Lose yourself in a musical landscape

The Out of Town Museum commissioned local composer and folk musician Ian Stephenson to create this unique aural and visual journey through the valley. The soundtrack features Ian and fellow Northumbrian musicians Andy May, Roddy Matthews and Emily Stephenson, Roger Peppe, Bob Diehl and Stephen Walker, the Coquet Concert Band and Rothbury Highland Pipe Band, plus the fabulous pipe organ of All Saints’ Church in Rothbury and the voices of local people.

Objects and Stories – Treasure in our Hands

The Out of Town Museum commissioned artist photographer Jose Snook to capture some cherished Coquetdale objects and stories through her lens.

Jose, who was brought up in the valley, has created this stunning set of images in conversation with local people. Each object, cupped in its owner’s hands, holds a precious memory or story.

She says, “I was interested to find out about the objects people treasure and how these objects have become repositories for their memories, and also more broadly what they might tell us about this area’s distinctive social heritage.”
